June 01, 2018 – 2nd City Update

Aloha Friends,

I hope this edition of the 2nd City Update (2CU) finds you and your family both in good health and spirits.

The month of June has the dubious honor of being the start of hurricane season.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting three to six tropical cyclones in the central Pacific Ocean this season.  If you have not done so, now is a good time to build (or refresh) your disaster preparedness kit.  Keep in mind that some supplies (such as bottled water and batteries) have a shelf life and may need to be cycled out.  Given Hawaii’s remote location, it is recommended that there is enough food and water on hand to survive for at least two weeks.

The end of the school year can be a difficult time for families when the school breakfasts and lunches that they relied on are no longer available because school is not in session. As part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s (DOE) Seamless Summer Option program, free meals will be served to all children age 18 and under. Mauka Lani Elementary School in Makakilo will be available to serve eligible students in Kapolei and Makakilo. Information on this program can be found at the DOE’s website.

Finally, the Hawaii Department of Transportation plans for similar multiple lane closures on the H-1 Freeway through the Aiea cooridor between the H-1/H-2 merge and the Aiea Heights Drive overpass. Closures are planned in both directions for Friday and Saturday nights, lasting into the following mornings. Please plan your commute and your weekend activities accordingly to avoid congestion when possible. More details on the planned lane closures can be found using the Hawaii Department of Transportation links below, and also on the projects website: h1waimalu.com

Other events in this week’s update include:

  • Summer Day Camps at the Kroc Center (starting today)
  • Hawaii Opera Theatre performing at the Kapolei Public Library (tomorrow, June 2nd)
  • Voter Information Booth at the Kapolei Shopping Center (tomorrow, June 2nd)
  • The West Oahu Pet Walk (also tomorrow, June 2nd)
  • and upcoming summer Dive’n’ Movie Nights at Wet & Wild Hawaii.

As always, you can find the most recent version of my Friday eNewsletter on our website: 2ndCityUpdate.org.

Aloha,

Sharon
